Having your car air conditioner blowing hot air can be one of the most frustrating problems to have.  Whether it’s in your house or car, when you’re ready for the cool refreshing AC, hot air blowing in your face can be unbelievably frustrating.

Any time a system in your car malfunctions or breaks it can be frustrating.  Wondering what the repair bill will be like and worrying about whether or not it’s going to do further damage can be worrisome.  Even worse, many times going to the mechanic to have the problem checked can be difficult because it can be hard to know if they’re telling you the truth or just trying to make a quick buck.

Air conditioning system repairs are often expensive for a few reasons.  First, some of the components of your air conditioning system can be extremely difficult to get to.  With the exception of your condenser and maybe your expansion valve, the components of your air conditioning system are often tucked far in your engine bay, by the firewall or under your dashboard.  This makes them extremely difficult to get to if they need to be replaced or repaired which can make labor costs really add up.

Another reason AC repair costs can be so high is because anytime you have to open up the system, which would include replacing any component or hose, you have to safely remove all the refrigerant first.  The operating fluid, or refrigerant, in your AC system is contained at high pressures in the system so if you removed any component without removing the refrigerant first, you’d be met with an explosive blast of potentially harmful refrigerant.  When removing refrigerant, special equipment has to be used to properly contain the used refrigerant and make sure the system is kept clean and dry so it can function properly when recharged.  This equipment is expensive and can take some time to pull all the old refrigerant out.

Lastly, leak detection is very difficult in your AC system which can also increase labor costs.  Most air conditioning systems malfunction due to leaks in the system rather than bad components.  These leaks are often tiny and not able to be seen with the naked eye.  This requires special equipment or leak detection tactics to even identify where the leak is adding to labor costs.
